Frontline stocks consolidated for a second day taking cues from weak markets overseas and in absence of foreign buyers. Domestic participants, however, were bullish, pumping money into valuation scrips in the mid- and small-cap space.
Bombay Stock Exchange's Sensex ended down 87 points at 19,784.89. National Stock Exchange's Nifty closed at 5906.85, down 5 points.
Major index gainers were ITC (up 8.09%), Grasim Industries (6.52%), Dr Reddy's Laboratories (3.67%), Mahindra & Mahindra (2.17%) and Maruti Suzuki (1.69%).
Hindalco Industries (down 5.89%), Larsen & Toubro (2.76%), Ranbaxy Laboratories (2.75%), Reliance Communications (2.3%) and ICICI Bank (2.29%) topped the list of index losers.
The BSE Mid-cap Index ended up 1.3 per cent and CNX Mid-cap Index 1.29 per cent higher.
Chambal Fertilisers and Chemicals (up 35.87%), Hinduja TMT (29.48%), Escorts (17.79%), Mirc Electronics (17.1%) and HTMT Global (12.53%) were the biggest gainers. (all figures are provisional)
Market breadth showed 782 gainers and 415 losers on NSE, while on BSE 1903 shares rose and 917 fell.
