India’s tea exports in April rose 33.6% on higher demand from Pakistan and better production, a source at the Tea Board said on Tuesday. Exports during April stood at 11.9 million kg, compared with 8.9 million kg a year ago. “A lower crop in Kenya and growing demand for Indian CTC (crush, tear, curl) tea has helped the exporters,” said Sujit Patra, joint secretary, Indian Tea Association.

Kenya’s tea production fell by 10% to 27.4 million kg in April 2008 compared to the same period last year due to poor rains, according to the Tea Board of Kenya.

Production in India during the period rose 27.6% to 80.1 million kg, said the Indian Tea Board official. Pakistan and Egypt are the traditional buyers of Kenyan tea, but this year India has been exporting more tea to those countries due to better production, he said.
