The market is expected to stay sideways today following mixed cues from global markets. Asian markets were trading mixed today, 4 March 2008. Hong Kong's Hang Seng (up 0.23% at 23,638.53), Taiwan's Taiwan Weighted (up 2.07% at 8,433.62), Japan's Nikkei (up 0.34% at 13,035.83), South Korea's Seoul Composite (up 0.08% at 1,673), rose
However, Seoul Composite (down 0.67% at 4,408.48), Singapore's Straits Times (down 0.03% at 2,925.80) declined.
Us markets recovered from earlier losses to finish flat in a volatile session on Monday, 3 March 2008. The main factors were weak economic data, big decline in auto sales and concerns about the fallout of housing slump. The Dow Jones industrial average fell 7.49 points, or 0.06%, to 12,258.90. The Standard & Poor's 500 index gained 0.71 points, or 0.05%, to 1,331.34, while the Nasdaq composite index was down 12.88 points, or 0.57%, to 2,258.60.
Back home, the BSE Sensex tumbled 900.84 points or 5.12% to 16,677.88 registering its second biggest single day point loss on a closing basis on Monday, 3 March 2008. It was also Sensex’s second biggest single day fall in percentage terms. The broader CNX S&P Nifty fell 270.50 points or 5.18% at 4953 on that day.
As per provisional data, foreign institutional investors (FIIs) sold shares worth Rs 711.31 crore Monday, 3 March 2008. Domestic institutional investors (DIIs) were net buyers of shares worth Rs 80.47 crore on that day.
FIIs were net sellers of Rs 304.51 crore in the futures & options segment on Monday, 3 March 2008. They were net sellers of index futures to the tune of Rs 706.15 crore and bought index options worth Rs 276.41 crore. They were net buyers of stock futures to the tune of Rs 127.21 crore and sold stock options worth Rs 1.97 crore.0
Meanwhile, the market will remain closed from 11:45 IST to 12:25 IST due to sun outage. Trading time has been extended till 16:15 IST. The changes in timings will be applicable from today, 4 March 2008 to 18 March 2008.
