The panic may have abated, but the nervousness among Indian investors is evident from the manner in which the market tumbled from the day’s high to close in the red, even as key Asian markets were firm. While the writedown of assets by global financial major Soc-Gen is unlikely to have any major implications for India, jittery FIIs are said to have offloaded baskets for Nifty shares, causing that index to fall much sharper than the Sensex.

Turnover in the NSE derivatives segment, added upto less than Rs 40,000 crore for the second successive day on Thursday, as big arbitrage firms asked jobbers on their payroll to desist from trading as they (the firms) could not meet the necessary margin requirements for both their high networth clients as well as jobbers.
